Sam Bankman-Fried, co-founder of FTX Cryptocurrency Derivatives Exchange, arrives at court in New York, US, on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023. Almost all customers of collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX will get their money back — and more, according to a court filing. FTX's high-profile founder Sam Bankman-Fried was convicted of seven criminal counts in early November, including charges related to stealing billions of dollars from FTX's customers. FTX had to find other ways to raise money because it has large sum of cryptocurrency missing from the exchange. Instead, the Debtors have had to look to other sources of recoverable value to repay creditors," FTX said in a press release on Wednesday.

Gold stocks Among Teng's top gold picks is Canadian miner Barrick Gold . Gold ETFs Aside from stocks, Teng recommended that investors consider exchange-traded funds (ETFs) as a good way to gain exposure to the yellow metal. "ETFs are highly liquid and can be bought and sold daily on the open market, making it easy to adjust a portfolio's gold exposure when needed," he said. He added that ETFs with exposure to the mining sector were an "attractive option," highlighting the VanEck Gold Miners ETF ( GDX ) and VanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF ( GDXJ ). While Teng is bullish on specific stocks within the ETFs, he notes that they broadly capture "the most popular large-cap and mid-cap gold miners funds," thereby offering a "relative balance in one's gold portfolio."

U.S. prosecutors are examining whether Tesla committed securities or wire fraud by misleading investors and consumers about its electric vehicles' self-driving capabilities, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters. Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems assist with steering, braking and lane changes — but are not fully autonomous. Investigators are exploring whether Tesla committed wire fraud, which involves deception in interstate communications, by misleading consumers about its driver-assistance systems, the sources said. They are also examining whether Tesla committed securities fraud by deceiving investors, two of the sources said. The Securities and Exchange Commission is also investigating Tesla's representations about driver-assistance systems to investors, one of the people said.

U.S. stocks have been rather volatile in the past month, but in the past week they had a strong run on hopes of rate cuts. Tech stocks, which would be boosted by rate cuts, have been a big part of that rally — with Meta , Alphabet and Amazon in particular having a strong showing over the past couple of weeks. Elsewhere, analysts are getting more optimistic on China stocks, especially those in the tech sector. Kevin Liu, managing director and strategist at CICC Research, said his conviction call would be a structural barbell allocation with themes including tech names "with high-end upgrading opportunities," among others. London CNN —FTX has recovered enough assets to pay most of its creditors back in full, the failed crypto exchange said late Tuesday as it unveiled a proposed reorganization plan. “The plan contemplates payment in full of all non-governmental creditors based on the value of their claims as determined by the (relevant) bankruptcy court,” FTX said in a statement. Ray, a restructuring specialist, took over as CEO in November 2022 to shepherd what was left of the firm through bankruptcy. “We are pleased to be in a position to propose a Chapter 11 (bankruptcy) plan that contemplates the return of 100% of bankruptcy claim amounts plus interest for non-governmental creditors,” John J. Ray III, FTX CEO and chief restructuring officer, said in Tuesday’s statement. If his plan is approved by the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District Court of Delaware, FTX expects that 98% of its creditors will receive approximately 118% of the amount of their allowed claims, FTX said.

FTX will pay back 98% of creditors at least 118% of what they're owed, its bankruptcy lawyers said. But payments will be based on crypto values in 2022, not what its worth now as the prices surge. FTX predicts it will have between $14.5 and $16.3 billion available for distribution — mostly from previous Alameda and FTX Ventures investments, bankruptcy lawyers said. FTX founder Sam Bankman-fried was arrested in January 2023 and convicted last fall of fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering. The jury was not allowed to consider any bankruptcy activities in rendering its verdict — though the judge factored into his sentencing that FTX lawyers said victims would recover their losses.

This year the rate markets have come back to a more sensible reality after flirting with the la-la land of 7 cuts. And all the while, the more sensible equity markets have paid only fleeting attention to their rate brother's whining. As a guy who was brought up in the fixed income and currency markets, I'm increasingly finding more sensibility in the equity markets as I head into later stages of my career. Having five-year inflation expectations (as measured by the 5-year breakeven inflation rate) never ramp higher while cumulative inflation surged around 20% since January 2021 is a testament to his stalwart success. There have been no fumbles at the Fed so far during a protracted fight to ensure anchored inflation expectations and long term price stability.

Customers of the failed cryptocurrency exchange FTX are poised to recover all of the money they lost when the firm collapsed in 2022 and receive interest on top of it, the company’s bankruptcy lawyers said on Tuesday. The announcement was a landmark in the attempt to recover the $8 billion in customer assets that disappeared when FTX imploded virtually overnight, setting off a crisis in the crypto industry. Those payments would flow from a pool of assets that FTX’s lawyers have pulled together in the 17 months since the exchange collapsed, the lawyers said. The amount owed to customers was calculated based on the value of their holdings at the time of FTX’s bankruptcy in November 2022. A customer who lost one Bitcoin when FTX imploded, for example, would be entitled to less than $20,000, even though a Bitcoin is now worth more than $60,000.

Israel and Hamas are engaged in tense cease-fire talks despite fighting in Rafah. Israel wants to keep its right to conduct more operations in Gaza, an analyst told Al-Jazeera. AdvertisementCease-fire talks to end the fighting in Gaza are still taking place in the background, despite Israel's military incursion into Rafah. The IDF's ongoing military operation comes as Israel and Hamas are engaged in tense talks to broker a cease-fire deal. This could lead to Netanyahu, Israel's longest-serving prime minister, losing power and an investigation into how Hamas' October 7 terrorist attacks were allowed to happen on his watch, he said.

Ukraine’s Parliament passed a bill on Wednesday that will allow some convicts to serve in the military in exchange for the possibility of parole at the end of their service, a move aimed at replenishing the army’s depleted ranks after more than two years of war. The bill must still be signed into law by President Volodymyr Zelensky. It was not immediately clear if he would do so, given the sensitivity of the matter. The policy echoes a practice used by Russia, which has committed tens of thousands of convicts to the war, allowing it to gain the upper hand in bloody assaults by sheer force of numbers. Olena Shulyak, the leader of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Servant of the People party, said that the decision to mobilize and parole a prisoner would be made by a court and would require the prisoner’s willingness to join the army.

A small tweak in BlackRock's model portfolio turned a sleepy fund into one of the market's fastest growing active ETFs overnight. BlackRock added the U.S. Equity Factor Rotation ETF (DYNF) to its target allocation model portfolio in mid-March. The growth of DYNF sits at the center of two broader trends — rapid growth of model portfolios and the proliferation of active ETFs. Model portfolios are strategies offered by asset managers to investors and financial advisors. Meanwhile, model portfolios that want to add active management may not be able to add the best-performers in a category.

CNN —Many adults heard the phrase “Robux” for the first time last holiday season when the virtual currency of gaming platform Roblox landed on the top of most wish lists. And it will have to prove to Wall Street there’s more growth up ahead. In its fourth quarter of 2023, Roblox revenue was $750 million, up 30% year-over-year – but had a net loss of $323.7 million. Like Fortnite, Roblox is also moving ahead with a“payout to creators” business model. “It’s clear that [Roblox] intends to go after younger gamers in 2024 and 2025,” Ward said.
